  • How Much Water

I'm pretty sure I heard this right

It was on one of the news networks but I don't know who they were quoting

Anyway, they said that every household should have 8 weeks of supplies put away for emergencies

I had always heard 2 weeks

Just looking at water for 2 people for 8 weeks, that works out to 60 gallons just for drinking purposes

Honest, that seems to be a bit much for suburban or urban dwellers to try to store

Your water heater is an already installed storage unit. A few 5 gallon water storage units with that adds up.
A water filtration device of some sort would let you drink from a more "yucky" water supply. A few filtration/purification straws are handy.

        Guaranteed.

Number is probably closer to 80-85%, maybe 90%.
My standing offer for people's "old" MRE's, $1 each for dark brown bags. $12/case $2 each for the sand tan bags (newer). $24/case
MAYBE, if they are 2010 and newer, I give you $2.50 each....... generosity.50 cents each for loose heaters. Where's those highlight video links mjkeat???????

Kinda been thinking about a water filter

          I've been looking at Berkey's

Probably should start doing some research

I've got a big Berkey, three 8 gallon cans, 2 water heaters (geothermal unit) and a couple million gallon reservoir (9 acres pond). I think I might have a handle on the water issue ad long as we stay put.

We'll manage off the well, if we ever have to manage.

During the summer, there's over 7K gallons in the back yard, drinkable.

We don't have (or need) "a plan", because our lifestyle offers us options.

                Are you satisfied with Berkey

You bring up a good point with staying put

What are your thoughts on water if you have to leave

You can make a big Berkey with their replacement cartridges and two 5 gal buckets.

For filtration at home or on the go, check out Sawyer products. Lots of options. Walmart even sells some Sawyer products in their stores.

Youtube for details on each solution.

For simple water storage, the half-gallon soda pop bottles work great, if you have room to store them. We boil the water, then fill the pop bottles, store them in the basement. They can be stacked sideways like firewood, and it doesn't take long to get a lot. If you do this, make sure the bottles are well cleaned, with no pop residue at all, or you'll go get one and find ugly little floaties in it--very unappetizing and probably not good for you.
I have just filled some clean bottles and tossed them in the back of the truck, where sometimes they'll be for a long time--couple of years, in some cases. Time comes, open it and drink, and the water is still good. In the winter, when they freeze up, they make good clubs. In a real survival situation, you can give one bottle to each person as their daily ration---then keep the bottles to fill up for the next time.

As to how much, who knows? I'd figure how long is it likely you'll need drinking water in a situation, then try to save up double.

Bathtubs and rain barrels are handy for toilet water; drinking water too, in a true 'survival' situation. Ace2

Yup, the Berkey is GTG (we use it daily) and portable. The "Big Berkey" model with just 2 filters has plenty of capacity for a family and is portable. As for "bugging out", the 3 8 gallon containers and Berkey are coming along.....there's a reason I drive a truck.
